Indonesian Ferry Sinks in Java Sea: One Dead, 102 Rescued, Authorities Continue Search


Jakarta: One person died and 102 others were rescued after the passenger ferry “Virgo Transport 8” sank while sailing in rough weather in the Java Sea. Emergency teams are continuing intensive search operations to reach the remaining passengers and crew members, totaling 243 people.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, the ferry had departed from Surabaya in East Java, bound for Banjarmasin in Borneo, before contact was lost early Sunday morning. Reports indicate that the last known location of the vessel before its disappearance was approximately 150 kilometers from its destination.



The navy, police, and the Virgo shipping company are participating in the search and rescue operations. The rescue vessel “Laksmana 241” and specialized emergency teams have been dispatched to the last known location of the vessel, and coordination among the relevant authorities has been intensified to expedite evacuation operations and ensure the safety of survivors in the challenging weather conditions.
