Baghdad:Spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Sabah Al-Numan, announced that the integration of the Sinjar Resistance Units marks a significant step in the Iraqi government’s efforts to monopolize arms under state control. This initiative is scheduled to conclude on June 30. The integration is part of broader plans that include the reconstruction of Sinjar, compensation for those affected, and facilitating the return of displaced persons.
According to Iraqi News Agency, Al-Numan stated that the government, under Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zeidi, is committed to resolving outstanding issues, thus avoiding the perpetuation of unresolved problems. The integration of the Sinjar Resistance Units and the Women’s Protection Units is seen as a strategic move to ensure state-exclusive control over weapons.
Al-Numan emphasized that the integration not only addresses security concerns but also has implications for economic, social, and humanitarian spheres. The Sinjar issue, complicated by external interference, is being addressed as part of this comprehensive state effort. He indicated that the local government in Nineveh Governorate is prioritizing Sinjar’s reconstruction and compensating those impacted as part of this initiative.
Furthermore, Al-Numan noted that Turkey had used the presence of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party as a justification for its actions. However, the state’s control over weapons aims to remove such pretexts by ensuring decisions regarding military actions remain with constitutional institutions. This development is intended to support the resolution of issues concerning Turkish forces’ presence.
He also highlighted that this integration is the culmination of ongoing efforts, with previous steps including the disarmament and integration of three major factions into the security forces. This process underscores the government’s commitment to completing the project of arms control by the specified deadline of June 30.
