Iranian Ministry Criticizes Unnotified Closure of Al-Shib Border Crossing

Tehran:The Iranian Interior Ministry has voiced its dissatisfaction over the unexpected closure of the Al-Shib border crossing. The ministry highlighted that the closure occurred without prior notification to the Iranian side, contrary to existing agreements.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Iranian Interior Ministry’s Spokesperson emphasized in a press conference that Iran was taken by surprise due to the closure. The spokesperson pointed out that there is a standing agreement between Iran and Iraq that mandates mutual notification if either country intends to close a border crossing for more than one day. This protocol was reportedly not adhered to by Iraq.

Earlier in the day, a government source had announced the closure of the Al-Shib border crossing, which connects Iran and Iraq through Maysan province. The announcement did not include the reasons for the closure. The Iranian spokesperson further elaborated that the crossing’s closure would affect the movement of individuals and goods, effective from Wednesday, and would remain in place until further notice.
