Iraq and Iran Agree to Develop Somar Border Crossing and Boost Trade


Mandali: Iraqi and Iranian officials have agreed to develop the Somar Border Crossing, extend customs working hours, and open a third gate dedicated to exports, as part of efforts to enhance trade exchange and facilitate border movement between the two countries.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, the agreement was reached during the third joint meeting held in Mandali District, Diyala Governorate. The meeting saw the participation of Iraqi District Commissioner Ali Dhamad Al-Zuheiri and his Iranian counterpart Sadegh Khodadadi, along with customs and border officials from both sides.



Both sides stressed the importance of continued bilateral coordination to improve infrastructure at the crossing, which would positively impact the flow of travelers and trade volume. The two parties agreed to open a third export gate and increase customs working hours, with separate gates for food and non-food products to facilitate export and transit operations.



Al-Zuheiri expressed Iraq’s readiness to extend working hours at the customs point and strengthen cooperation in health and public services. Meanwhile, Khodadadi emphasized the need for official recognition of the crossing and enhancing its role as a vital trade route.
