Iraq Attends UN Headquarters Bombing Commemoration Ceremony with Guterres


New york: The Permanent Mission of Iraq to the United Nations participated in a ceremony commemorating the anniversary of the bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad, attended by Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres. The Mission emphasized that “confronting terrorism requires concerted efforts from the international community.”



According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release stating that the event marked the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attack on the UN headquarters in Baghdad in 2003, which coincides with World Humanitarian Day. The ceremony took place at the UN headquarters in New York, where Secretary-General Guterres laid a wreath at the memorial for the victims, followed by a moment of silence.



The Charg© d’Affaires ad interim, Mohammed Sahib Majeed, delivered Iraq’s statement during the ceremony. He paid tribute to the victims of the bombing, including Sergio Vieira de Mello and his colleagues, as well as those who perished in the 2009 bombing at the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Baghdad. Majeed emphasized that “terrorism knows no nationality, religion, or borders,” and called for unified global efforts to combat it.



Majeed also expressed the Iraqi government’s gratitude for the contributions and sacrifices of UN and humanitarian workers in promoting peace and serving humanity.
