Iraqi Government Refutes Houthi Presence and Addresses Al-Sheeb Border Closure

Baghdad:Iraqi government spokesperson Haider al-Aboudi has publicly denied the existence of any offices belonging to Yemen’s Houthi movement in Iraq. He emphasized that hosting armed groups from foreign countries contradicts Iraq’s constitutional principles.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Aboudi clarified that there are no identified Houthi offices in Iraq, dismissing the need for government action on the matter. He attributed persistent rumors to narratives spread on social media.

The spokesperson highlighted Iraq’s constitutional stance against foreign armed groups and mentioned ongoing coordination with Turkey to address the presence of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and its members in Iraq. Additionally, he noted that Iraq is working with Iran through a joint high-level committee to manage the issue of Iranian Kurdish armed groups within Iraqi borders, particularly in the Kurdistan Region.

Al-Aboudi further explained the closure of the Al-Sheeb border crossing with Iran in Maysan Province, citing inadequate technical, technological, and developmental readiness as the reasons. The suspension aims to enhance the crossing’s logistical capabilities, while other border points remain operational to maintain trade flow with Iran.
