Iraqi Presidency Stresses Constitution as Sole Path to National Unity and Stability

Baghdad: The Presidency of the Republic of Iraq has asserted that adherence to the constitution remains the sole method to resolve internal disputes and maintain the nation’s unity, emphasizing the irreplaceable nature of the constitutional route in confronting national challenges.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, in a statement commemorating the 20th anniversary of the 2005 referendum on the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq, the Presidency highlighted the significance of this day in the nation’s history. It marked a transformative period in Iraq’s evolution from a centralized authoritarian regime to a federal democratic parliamentary system, embodying the people’s will and safeguarding their sovereignty.

The statement underscored that the constitution emerged from extensive national consensus among all Iraqi factions, establishing the groundwork for a national partnership. It stressed the importance of upholding both the letter and spirit of the constitution to protect the democratic system.

The Presidency urged the Council of Representatives of Iraq to accelerate the enactment of several crucial laws, including the Federal Supreme Court Law, the High Commission for Women’s Empowerment Law, the Supreme Water Council Law, amendments to the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law, the Iraq Creativity Award Law, the Residential Land Subdivision Law, the Federation Council Law, and the Law on Recovering Corruption Proceeds. It also called for the repeal of decisions issued by the dissolved Revolutionary Command Council. Moreover, it encouraged political forces and legislative and executive authorities to complete constitutional legislation, implement Article 140 of the Constitution, and pass the Oil and Gas Law to ensure constitutional justice and national stability.

The Presidency acknowledged the challenges of establishing a democratic constitutional system following decades of authoritarian governance. Nonetheless, it affirmed the unwavering determination of the Iraqi people to strengthen the rule of law and state institutions, urging solidarity among all Iraqis to maintain a free and united homeland for everyone.
