Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani attended a meeting of the Presidencies on Sunday, which included President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, Speaker of Parliament Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Faiq Zidan. The meeting reviewed regional developments and the repercussions of the war in the region. Stressing the rejection of any violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and airspace or its use as a launching pad for aggression against neighboring countries, the meeting affirmed support for the government in taking the necessary measures to protect Iraq’s airspace and sovereignty, and pursuing legal avenues before international bodies to prevent violations of Iraq’s sovereignty.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting condemned the blatant aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran, as it constitutes a flagrant violation of international laws and norms. It urged the international community to take immediate action to stop the war, prevent its expansion, and engage in dialogue and de-escalation, thus enhancing security and stability in the region. Concern was also expressed over the targeting of Iranian nuclear facilities, as it represents a dangerous escalation that threatens peace at the regional and international levels.
The meeting discussed the political, economic, and social conditions in the country, and several issues related to improving services and the standard of living for citizens. The issue of funding salaries in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq was also discussed, and the regional government was called upon to implement the Federal Court’s ruling so that the federal government can fund the salaries of the region’s employees and resolve any remaining issues in accordance with the constitution and the law.
The attendees emphasized the need to resume the sessions of the House of Representatives to continue its legislative plan to approve draft laws submitted to the Council for the remainder of its current session.
The meeting also discussed legal issues and the importance of establishing the rule of law, the separation of powers, and supporting the independence of the judiciary to achieve justice. It also followed up on the measures taken by the Supreme Judicial Council to implement the amendment to the General Amnesty Law. The President of the Supreme Judicial Council outlined the procedures of the Amnesty Law Implementation Committees, whose work since the law’s implementation date and until June 19, 2025, has resulted in the release of 26,914 individuals from prisons and detention centers, and the recovery of 12.985 billion dinars.
The meeting also discussed ongoing preparations for fair and transparent elections that reflect the aspirations and choices of Iraqis in their representatives. It also emphasized the need to provide support to the Independent High Electoral Commission to complete all its requirements in this regard, ensure the elections are held on schedule, and take legal action against those who use political money.
