Mogadishu: A joint operation between the Turkish Navy and Somali Armed Forces has successfully freed the cargo ship “MV LUTUF” from pirate control off the Somali coast. The Somali Ministry of Defense announced the success of the operation, which lasted ten days, culminating in the release of the ship.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Somali Ministry of Defense revealed through a press release on the “X” platform that the cargo ship was seized by pirates on August 17th near the coast of Jifleh in the Eyl district of the Nugal region in northeastern Somalia. The operation, which was a collaborative effort between the Turkish and Somali military forces, resulted in the destruction of four boats used by the pirates and the elimination of 14 pirate operatives.

The ministry’s statement highlighted that continuous pressure from the security forces compelled the remaining pirates to abandon the vessel and flee. Following this, security forces were able to establish full control over the ship, allowing it to safely continue its intended voyage.

The operation was part of a defense cooperation agreement between Somalia and Turkey, designed to bolster collaboration between the two nations in safeguarding the Somali coastline, ensuring maritime safety, and combating piracy. The ministry underscored the grave nature of piracy as a criminal act deserving of stringent punishment and issued a stern warning to those involved in piracy, as well as their supporters and facilitators, about the legal consequences they face.
