Rosario: The father of star Lionel Messi has passed away in the Argentinian city of Rosario. Newell's Old Boys, the Argentine club where Lionel Messi has played since childhood, announced on Saturday the death of Jorge Messi, the player's father and agent, at the age of 68, after a long battle with illness.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Argentine club said in a statement: "Atl©tico Newell's Old Boys bids farewell with deep sadness and regret to Jorge Messi, who passed away at the age of 68 in Rosario," in central Argentina. The statement continued: "His unwavering support and behind-the-scenes leadership were essential to supporting Lionel every step of the way, from his beginnings in the Malvinas neighborhood to reaching the pinnacle of glory in world football. Thank you for teaching him to love these colors (of the club)."
The club added: "The board of directors, members, athletes, and the entire Newell's Old Boys family extend their deepest condolences to (his wife) Celia, (his children) Lionel, Rodrigo, Matas, and Mara Sol, and to all his family and loved ones during this difficult time."
Argentine media outlets, including Infobae and Ol©, reported that Jorge Messi passed away after being hospitalized in his hometown of Rosario, following a long battle with illness. The Argentine star was visibly affected by his father's struggles during the 2022 World Cup, and his tears during his team's match against Algeria prompted the Messi family to release an official statement regarding his health to refute the rumors.
