Baghdad: Former Speaker of the Greek Parliament, Konstantinos Tassoulas, was sworn in as the new President of Greece on Thursday, succeeding Katerina Sakellaropoulou, whose five-year term ended earlier this month. Tassoulas, 66, brings his extensive experience as a lawyer and parliamentarian to the role, representing the ruling center-right party.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Tassoulas was nominated for the position by the current Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis. His nomination received substantial support, securing 160 votes in the 300-seat parliament during the vote held last February. This transition marks a significant moment in Greece’s political landscape, as Tassoulas steps into the presidency with the backing of the government and the confidence of the parliament.
