Kurdistan Region Health Ministry Enforces Ban on Abortion Pills in Pharmacies


Baghdad: The Ministry of Health in the Kurdistan Regional Government has officially prohibited the sale and dispensing of abortion pills in pharmacies. This decisive action is aimed at regulating the use of such drugs and ensuring they are only accessed through appropriate medical channels.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry of Health issued a letter to all Directorates General of Health, doctors’ and pharmacists’ syndicates, and medical personnel. The letter highlighted the importance of taking necessary measures to restrict the use of abortion drugs in the public interest. The Ministry specifically underscored the prohibition of dispensing these drugs without a medical consultation and an official prescription from a specialist gynecologist.



The Ministry further stated that the sale of these drugs in pharmacies is prohibited without an authorized prescription. Pharmaceutical companies and warehouses are also barred from supplying these substances to any unofficial entity. The letter emphasized that any violations of this directive will result in serious legal consequences, with necessary judicial measures to be taken against those responsible.
