Kuwait Amends Residency Law to Aid Citizenship Revoked Individuals

Kuwait city: Kuwait has introduced a significant amendment to its residency laws, granting a 10-year residency permit to individuals whose Kuwaiti citizenship has been revoked. This change, which also extends to their dependents who have returned to their original nationality or acquired another nationality, aims to provide stability and legal clarity to affected individuals.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the decision was published in the official gazette, “Kuwait Today,” and outlines the authority of the Director General of the General Department of Residency Affairs to set the terms and conditions for both granting and renewing these residency permits. The beneficiaries of this decision will also be able to work in Kuwait, following the regulations stipulated by the department.

The amended regulations also address the duration of residents’ stays outside Kuwait, restricting it to six months. Exceptions to this rule include children of Kuwaiti women who have not acquired citizenship, property owners, investors under Law No. 116 of 2013, and holders of residency permits. The General Department of Residency Affairs holds the discretion to permit absences exceeding six months, provided the residency permit remains valid. Furthermore, domestic workers are limited to a four-month stay outside Kuwait unless they secure prior permission.

This legislative amendment is focused on regulating the legal status and residency of individuals affected by its provisions. It aims to establish clear guidelines for granting and renewing residency and employment, while also managing the duration of residents’ stays outside Kuwait.
