Macron Signs Euthanasia Law Legalizing Assisted Dying in France

Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron has officially signed the law legalizing euthanasia in France, marking a significant step in the country’s approach to end-of-life care. The legislation was enacted on Wednesday, as documented in the Official Journal.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the French Parliament gave its approval to the legislation in mid-July, and the Constitutional Council confirmed its constitutionality on August 14. This new law permits individuals in the late or terminal stages of a serious and incurable illness the right to seek assisted dying.

The law stipulates that the procedure can be accessed if a person is enduring severe pain from an incurable disease or if the pain becomes intolerable after the cessation of treatment. Eligibility for this option is restricted to individuals over the age of 18 who are either French citizens or hold legal permanent residency in France.

This development reflects a broader shift in how France addresses the complexities of end-of-life decisions, providing a legal framework for those seeking relief from suffering in their final days.
