Minister of Culture Inaugurates Restored Al-Rabi’iyya Mosque in Old Mosul


Mosul: The Minister of Culture inaugurated the Al-Rabi’iyya Mosque in Old Mosul after the completion of its restoration work. Minister of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Dr. Ahmed Fakak Al-Badrani emphasized the significance of opening the Al-Rabi’iyya Mosque, viewing it as a pivotal step in the ongoing efforts to revive Mosul’s heritage. The initiative is part of a broader campaign to restore life to the old city, which has been the focus of continuous rebuilding efforts aimed at preserving its religious and cultural monuments.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, Dr. Al-Badrani made these remarks during the mosque’s inauguration, highlighting its status as one of Mosul’s oldest and most historically significant mosques. The restoration project was carried out with the oversight of the Minister and Ali Obaid Shalgam, Chairman of the General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage, with support from the ALIPH Organization in collaboration with the Sunni Endowment Diwan.



The inauguration ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the Governor of Nineveh, Abdul Qader Al-Dakhil, the Head of the Sunni Endowment Diwan, Dr. Amer Al-Janabi, the French Ambassador to Iraq, and its Consul General in Mosul. Also present were the Inspector of Antiquities and Heritage of Nineveh, Ruwaid Al-Laylah, the Director of the Sunni Endowment in Nineveh, Muhammad Hassan Qaddo, as well as numerous religious and social figures, and representatives from international and foreign organizations.



The Al-Rabi’iyya Mosque, a prominent landmark in Mosul, is noted for its distinctive architecture that harmoniously blends spiritual elements with architectural precision, reflecting the city’s identity and its rich Islamic history. The restoration work involved rehabilitating the domes, mihrab, and minaret, as well as restoring the stone and plaster decorations that adorn its walls, all while ensuring the preservation of its authentic heritage character.



The ceremonies concluded with attendees performing a prayer inside the mosque, an event marked by feelings of gratitude and joy among the local population. Residents expressed pride in the revival of this ancient spiritual landmark, which stands as a testament to Mosul’s resilience, authenticity, and historical legacy.
