Minister of Education Calls for National Effort to Eradicate Illiteracy in Iraq


Baghdad: Minister of Education and Head of the Higher Authority for Literacy, Abdul Karim Abtan al-Jubouri, has declared that the eradication of illiteracy is a crucial national responsibility tied to Iraq’s future development. He emphasized the universal right to education, asserting that it should be accessible to everyone regardless of their age or circumstances.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Jubouri made these remarks at a ceremony organized by the Ministry to commemorate International Literacy Day. He highlighted that literacy is not merely about learning to read and write; it is about equipping individuals with the necessary skills and capacities to contribute productively to society. The Minister reiterated the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to cultivating a well-educated Iraq that can actively shape its future.



The Ministry revealed in a press release that the ceremony was conducted under the theme “Literacy: The Path to Revitalization.” It was graced by the presence of the head of the Executive Authority for Literacy, several parliamentary members, senior educational leaders, and advisors. The event featured an awareness video that detailed the mechanisms for attracting participants to literacy programs. This initiative is part of the Ministry’s broader effort to incorporate employees from various ministries into these programs.



The press release further stated that over 31,000 students have enrolled in the Ministry’s literacy programs this year. There has been an expansion in the number of centers and efforts to reach the most vulnerable societal segments. The literacy programs were also extended to various workplaces, including employees from the Ministries of Electricity and Interior.
