Enaam Mayara, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), chaired, here Monday, the 50th meeting of PAM Bureau, which focused on several topics of regional and international interest and the high-level PAM mission to the Middle East.

The participants in this biannual meeting examined the latest developments in the Mediterranean area, in addition to several other issues, including human trafficking in conflict zones and the role of parliaments in the fight against this phenomenon.

They also discussed the participation of PAM in the forthcoming United Nations General Assembly and COP-28 in the United Arab Emirates.

The program of PAM mission to the Middle East includes, in addition to Jordan, field visits to Palestine and Israel, with the aim of bringing together points of view of both parties, on a parliamentary level, and preparing the second International Parliamentary Peace Forum in the Middle East, after the first edition organized by PAM in 2009 in Malta, in partnership with the Nations United, Mr. Mayara told MAP.

The visit, he added, also aims to promote dialogue between the parties through parliamentary diplomacy and bringing together the points of view of the main stakeholders to know their positions with a view to examining choices and scenarios and considering solutions in accordance with United Nations resolutions.

To this end, he said, “we will work to identify specific steps to restore trust between the parties and fight violence, to improve the living conditions of Palestinians and promote the security of civilians in general”.

Mr. Mayara also noted that the holding in Amman of 50th PAM Bureau meeting demonstrates the support of the Mediterranean parliamentary body to the reforms launched by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan at political and economic levels, but also the promotion of North-South relations.

The program of the PAM mission to the Middle East also includes several meetings with senior Jordanian, Palestinian and Israeli officials, as well as with the Assistant Secretary-General and the Deputy Commissioner General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

Chaired by Morocco, the PAM Bureau is made up of representatives of nine Parliaments from the Mediterranean region, 5 from the South and 4 from the North.
