Baghdad: Ali Hatem Al-Hassan, a member of the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee, affirmed on Wednesday that Iraq’s interests must take precedence in international relations, noting that the country’s position qualifies it to play a leading role in political decision-making.

According to Iraqi News Agency, Al-Hassan stated that differing opinions are inherent in any parliamentary and pluralistic system. While viewpoints may vary, the ultimate outcomes, particularly in foreign policy, often converge. However, conflicts and mistrust can impact the consensus and agreements reached, affecting the country’s domestic interests.

He further explained that no state can exist in isolation within the international community, especially in today’s global climate. Stability, both politically and in terms of security, cannot be achieved independently as nations rely on one another.

Al-Hassan highlighted that despite a tense regional situation, Iraq holds a vital strategic, political, and economic position, qualifying it to assume a leading role in political decision-making. He emphasized the importance of acting with a state-oriented mindset, respecting other nations’ financial and military capabilities, while ensuring Iraq leverages these dynamics for its own benefit.

He stressed the necessity of safeguarding the country’s interests by maintaining a balance in international relations, without negating historical ties with certain nations, but ensuring Iraq’s interests remain the top priority.
