Residents of Al-Shamiya District Protest Against Political Quota for District Mayor Nomination

DIWANIYAH: Dozens of residents of Al-Shamiya District, located west of Diwaniyah Governorate, gathered to protest the nomination of a district mayor through a political quota system. The demonstrators voiced their opposition to the current process, which they believe undermines fair representation and local governance.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the protesters have urged the local government and the provincial council to eliminate political quotas from the nomination process for the district mayor. They are advocating for the selection of a candidate from within the district who is equipped to address the local issues effectively. The residents believe that a mayor who understands the district’s unique challenges and has the community’s interests at heart will be better positioned to find suitable solutions to the ongoing problems faced by Al-Shamiya District.
