Baghdad: The General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage has commenced the restoration work on the ancient ziggurat of Aqar Quf, in collaboration with an Italian mission.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage is actively engaging in maintenance efforts directed by the Board’s Chairman, Ali Obeid Shalgham. The Italian mission, led by Professor Nicola Marchetti, along with the Departments of Maintenance and Preservation of Antiquities and Investigations and Excavations, is focusing on addressing damage and cracks in the ziggurat’s walls. The restoration includes repairing the brickwork and reinforcing the structural stability of the walls.

The Aqar Quf ziggurat is of substantial historical, cultural, and architectural significance. This restoration initiative is part of the Board’s program aimed at preserving and sustaining archaeological sites. The efforts utilize scientific methods and adhere to established standards for the maintenance and restoration of antiquities, ensuring the protection of their historical value for future generations.
