Baghdad: Legal expert and consultant Salem Hawas announced his candidacy for the presidency of Iraq within the specified legal timeframe, based on Law No. (8) of 2012 concerning the provisions for candidacy for the presidency. He affirmed that he fulfills all the constitutional and legal requirements stipulated in Article (1) of the law, in terms of citizenship, legal capacity, age, educational qualifications, good conduct and integrity, and the absence of any criminal convictions or accountability and justice proceedings against him.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, in a statement, Hawas explained that his candidacy stems from his complete faith in the Iraqi Constitution and his respect for the political agreements that allocated the position to the Kurdish component. However, this candidacy aims to break the political deadlock, activate constitutional and legal provisions on the ground for the first time in Iraq, and proceed with their practical implementation in a way that strengthens the democratic process and affirms that adherence to the Constitution is the foundation for managing the affairs of the state and its institutions.
