Baghdad: The head of the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, has reiterated his commitment to supporting the Mandaean community and addressing their needs.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, a statement from al-Sudani’s office revealed that he welcomed a delegation from the Mandaean leadership on Sunday. This meeting was attended by key figures, including former MP Osama al-Badri, the Prime Minister’s Advisor for Mandaean Affairs, Bashar Faisal, and the head of the General Council for Mandaean Affairs, Basim Barak. The primary focus was to discuss the current situation of the Mandaean community and their requirements.

The delegation acknowledged al-Sudani’s previous support for the community during his tenure as Prime Minister, highlighting several initiatives he undertook. These included a historic visit, the formation of a committee to reclaim minority lands, directives to acquire community lands, and support for the community’s fund to maintain the site of the baptismal font. Additionally, the appointment of an advisor for Mandaean affairs in the Cabinet was noted as a significant step towards ensuring the community’s representation.

The Mandaean leaders expressed optimism for continued backing from the Reconstruction and Development Coalition. They submitted a request specifically for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the baptismal font site in Maysan Governorate. Al-Sudani confirmed that the Mandaean Sabean community remains a vital part of Iraq’s national fabric and cultural history.
