Khartoum: The Sudanese president has initiated discussions with specialists to explore avenues for the development of the tourism sector while addressing the challenges facing archaeological sites. The head of the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, convened a meeting on Tuesday with Ammar Yasser Kattan al-Yassiri, head of the Tourism and Hotel Services Association, along with a delegation of tourism experts and academics. The meeting was also attended by MP Saba Ali al-Saadi from the Reconstruction and Development Coalition.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Sudani’s office released a statement detailing that the discussions focused on the current state of the tourism sector and its economic significance. Key topics included strategies to enhance tourism’s contribution to the GDP, thereby maximizing state revenues, and plans for developing the infrastructure of tourist and archaeological sites. The meeting also emphasized the need for updating tourism legislation to align with investment and development goals.
The discussions further highlighted issues leading to the closure of several archaeological sites, primarily due to a shortage of specialized personnel and inadequate funding for maintenance and restoration. Participants stressed the necessity of leveraging suitable expertise and delegating responsibilities to specialists to invigorate the tourism sector.
Al-Sudani underscored tourism’s vital role in the Iraqi economy, stating that focusing on this sector is crucial for diversifying income sources and generating employment opportunities.
