Baghdad: The Supreme Judicial Council, on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, emphasized the critical role of protecting freedoms and constitutional rights as the essence of a democratic state and a pillar of the rule of law.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Council affirmed in its statement that the judiciary serves as a guarantor in preserving and protecting these rights. The statement, issued to mark the International Day of Democracy on September 15, highlighted the importance of freedom of opinion, expression, and respect for diversity and pluralism as rights enshrined in the Iraqi Constitution.

The Council reiterated that these rights must be exercised in a manner that upholds the rights and dignity of others, avoiding any transgression or offense against any group, religion, sect, or belief. The emphasis was on ensuring that these freedoms contribute to consolidating freedom, justice, the rule of law, and strengthening social peace.
