Tom Barak Highlights Risks of Israeli Military Actions in Syria

Doha:Barak warns of the dangers of Israel’s military activity in Syria and hints at potential U.S. intervention to halt it. The US envoy to Syria and Iraq, Tom Barak, expressed concerns over an Israeli strike near the Turkish border that nearly led to a major escalation in the region. He emphasized the need to cease Israeli operations in Syria, suggesting that Washington might step in to stop them.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Barak shared these insights during his speech at the Global Security Forum in Doha. He highlighted that the August 18 strike on the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northern Syria was executed without informing Turkey or the United States in advance. This lack of communication, he explained, could have prompted Turkey to deploy its aircraft, potentially escalating the situation into a more perilous scenario. Barak reassured, however, that a direct confrontation between Israel and Turkey is unlikely, as neither country desires such an outcome.

Further details revealed by i24NEWS indicate that Israel defended the strike as a preventive measure to counteract an increasing Turkish military presence in the area. Contrarily, the Turkish Ministry of Defense refuted claims of having any forces stationed at the airbase targeted by the Israeli operation.
