Ankara: Trkiye has expressed its condolences to Algeria after forest fires claimed the lives of 12 individuals across several provinces. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement offering sympathy and support to the Algerian government and its people.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Turkish Foreign Ministry conveyed its sorrow over the tragic loss of life resulting from the recent forest fires. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life caused by the forest fires that broke out in various Algerian provinces,” the ministry stated. The statement further expressed hopes for mercy upon the victims and offered sincere condolences to their families and the Algerian public.

Algerian authorities reported the deaths caused by forest fires that erupted due to an ongoing heatwave impacting several regions. On Wednesday, 58 fires were recorded, with 21 extinguished through aerial firefighting efforts. The remaining 37 fires are still being managed, and precautionary evacuations have been initiated for residents in areas at risk from the blazes.

The Algerian Meteorological Office had previously issued warnings about the heatwave, predicting temperatures could soar to 49 degrees Celsius in some areas. The heatwave was expected to affect several provinces last Wednesday and Thursday, as stated in a special bulletin from the National Meteorological Office.

In a related context, Algerian authorities noted that last month, wildfires led to the deaths of six individuals. Civil Protection data revealed that the number of fires recorded between May 1st and July 20th this year reached around 4,000, marking a significant increase from the 1,501 fires reported during the same timeframe in 2025, reflecting a rise of almost 167%.
