Washington: US President Donald Trump stated that he is uncertain about who to negotiate with in Iran, highlighting the absence of key Iranian leaders and expressing skepticism about anyone wanting to assume the presidency. Trump reiterated his view that the Strait of Hormuz is “American territory,” underlining that the United States will not permit Iran to develop nuclear weapons.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Trump expressed confidence that Iran is eager to finalize a deal, forecasting a reduction in energy prices once issues related to Iran are resolved. He noted that while Iran is desperate for an agreement, it has yet to propose “the right deal.”
In a speech delivered late Friday, Trump remarked on Iran’s economic challenges, stating that the country is facing an inflation rate of 300% and is struggling to pay its soldiers and police officers. He emphasized US control over the Strait of Hormuz and clarified that the economic strategy against Iran does not limit US military options.
The US is preparing to implement what it describes as “the toughest financial sanctions in history” against Tehran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bisnett is set to reveal the details on Monday, while Tehran has warned that its response to any new US threats would be “devastating.”
Trump has previously cautioned that any nation providing “any kind of vital support to Iran” would face economic repercussions.
