Cairo: Tunisia has officially taken over the Chairmanship of the Council of the League of Arab States at the Ministerial Level, with Mr. Mohamed Ali Nafti, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Tunisians Abroad, presiding over the 166th session.
According to African Press Organization, during his address, Minister Nafti highlighted the pressing issues facing the Arab region and emphasized Tunisia’s commitment to fostering Arab solidarity, bridging differences, and enhancing joint Arab action. He underscored that the security and stability of the region are contingent on the Palestinian people regaining their legitimate rights. The Minister reaffirmed Tunisia’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause under the leadership of President Kas Saed, advocating for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
Minister Nafti condemned recent attacks on Syrian and Lebanese territories and expressed solidarity with the people of these nations. He reiterated the need to respect Syria and Lebanon’s sovereignty and independence. The Minister also expressed support for a Libyan-led solution to ensure Libya’s territorial integrity and extended solidarity to Sudan and Yemen as they strive to maintain their unity and sovereignty amidst ongoing crises.
Tunisia’s solidarity extends to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Jordan, and Iraq in facing attacks on their sovereignty. The Minister rejected all forms of aggression and emphasized respect for state sovereignty and non-interference in domestic affairs. He called for improved coordination among Arab states to tackle security challenges and proposed the development of monitoring and early-warning systems.
In the development, social, and economic sectors, Minister Nafti highlighted Tunisia’s proactive role in implementing Arab strategies. He recalled Tunisia hosting the Arab High-Level Preparatory Meeting for the Second World Summit for Social Development in 2025 and its Chairmanship of the Economic and Social Council of the League of Arab States from the same period. Tunisia was also awarded the Arab Government Excellence Award in education for its “Integrated School Life System” project in December 2025.
Minister Nafti further noted Tunisia’s leadership in the health sector and its designation as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2027, which underscores Tunisia’s cultural heritage and potential for fostering tourism and cultural exchanges among Arab nations.
Concluding his address, the Minister reiterated Tunisia’s commitment to enhancing joint Arab actions in collaboration with the League of Arab States’ Secretary-General and member states. He aims to strengthen the League’s capacity to address challenges and serve the aspirations of the Arab populace.
Arab delegations at the session expressed appreciation for Tunisia’s contributions to Arab unity and confidence in its leadership. They hope Tunisia’s Chairmanship will promote dialogue, consultation, and unity among Arab nations.
On the sidelines of the session, the Minister engaged with several Arab counterparts to discuss bilateral relations and cooperative mechanisms, as well as preparations for upcoming bilateral initiatives.
