Turkey Supports Iraq’s Efforts to Reassert Control in Sinjar

Sinjar:Ankara Turkey’s Ministry of National Defence has expressed support for the recent actions taken by the Iraqi government to strengthen state authority in the Sinjar district of Nineveh province. The ministry described the transfer of security responsibilities to Iraqi security forces as a positive step towards achieving stability in the region.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Turkish ministry issued a statement welcoming Iraq’s initiatives in Sinjar. The statement highlighted that recent security improvements have facilitated arrangements for the handover of the Bashiqa-Zilkan military base to Iraqi authorities, following a mutually agreed mechanism and timeline.

Turkey has reiterated its commitment to supporting Iraq through training, military and security cooperation, and counterterrorism efforts. This support comes in response to the Iraqi government’s recent measures to reorganize the security situation in Sinjar. Earlier this week, the Iraqi government initiated procedures to disband the independent military status of the Sinjar Resistance Units and incorporate their members into official security institutions. Additionally, security responsibilities on Mount Sinjar have been transferred to federal authorities.
