Baghdad: The Turkish Ministry of Defense has reported that its military operations in northern Iraq and Syria have resulted in the elimination of 502 militants from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) since the start of this year. This announcement underscores Turkey’s continued efforts to combat the outlawed group in these regions.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Turkish Defense Ministry Spokesperson Zeki Aktrk revealed during a press conference held at the ministry’s headquarters in Ankara that recent operations in the past week alone led to the death of 24 militants. These operations primarily involved airstrikes conducted by Turkish warplanes targeting PKK positions in northern Iraq and Syria.

Aktrk detailed that 296 PKK militants have been neutralized in northern Syria and 206 in northern Iraq since December 1st. He reiterated that the primary aim of these operations is to secure Turkey’s borders and not to infringe upon the sovereignty of Iraq or Syria. The spokesperson emphasized Turkey’s commitment to continuing its fight against terrorist organizations threatening the security of the region.

The PKK, which has a stronghold in the Qandil Mountains in northern Iraq, is known to be active in various cities and regions, launching attacks into Turkey. Aktrk highlighted the Turkish army’s dedication to eradicating these sources of terrorism.

The ongoing military operation, known as “Claw Lock,” was launched on April 18, 2021, targeting PKK strongholds in regions including Metina, Kara, Hakurk, Zap, Afsin, and Bazian in northern Iraq.
