Ankara: Devlet Bah§eli, leader of Turkey’s Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and a political ally of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has called for the drafting of a new constitution and amendments to the laws governing elections and political parties in Turkey.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Bah§eli made these remarks during an interview with the local Haber Trk channel. He emphasized the need for political stability in Turkey, asserting that the current presidential system provides this stability. However, he noted that certain aspects of its implementation require review after two phases of operation to ensure enhanced effectiveness.

Bah§eli urged that drafting a new constitution should involve discussions on necessary legal and political amendments. He called for the inclusion of civil society organizations, intellectuals, academics, and political forces in these discussions to create a comprehensive framework.

Addressing the ongoing process of dissolving and disarming the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), Bah§eli noted that the process has not encountered “serious obstacles,” despite tensions and provocations related to separatist activities. He highlighted the consensus reached within the parliamentary committee, which allowed for the passage of a framework law with support from 467 deputies. Bah§eli expressed surprise at this level of support, indicating it has expanded societal consensus and strengthened solidarity around the process.
