Baghdad:Parliament Speaker Hebat Al-Halbousi affirmed that the conclusion of the mission of US and International Coalition forces represents a significant moment that must be approached with a sense of responsibility. He emphasized the importance of continuing support for efforts that strengthen the state’s capabilities and security institutions, while promoting development and stability.
According to Iraqi News Agency, Al-Halbousi delivered these remarks during the “Sovereignty Day” conference, which was held under the auspices of the Prime Minister and attended by various officials, including the President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, national political leaders, heads of diplomatic missions, and representatives from different social sectors.
Al-Halbousi remarked that the end of the US and International Coalition forces’ mission in Iraq should be seen not merely as an occasion for celebration but as a moment to take on the responsibility of ensuring that the withdrawal of foreign forces leads to the realization of the state’s capabilities. He warned against the creation of a vacuum that could be exploited by terrorism, chaos, or external interference.
He further noted that past experiences have shown that security is not achieved solely by the departure of foreign forces. Instead, it requires building state institutions, enhancing security forces, consolidating national decision-making, ensuring justice and development, and engaging all Iraqis in safeguarding their state and shaping its future. Al-Halbousi stressed the necessity of learning from history to avoid repeating past mistakes, highlighting Iraq’s commitment to preventing a security or political vacuum that could allow terrorism to infiltrate its cities and communities.
