Washington: The US House of Representatives approved the budget proposed by the Republican Party for the fiscal year 2025, which began on October 1. The bill saw the support of 217 members, while 215 members opposed it. This approval follows the backing of US President Donald Trump and recommendations from two relevant committees in the House of Representatives.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Senate in Congress had previously approved its draft of the general budget, also proposed by Republicans in the House. This development means that lawmakers in both chambers will have to address differences and work towards a joint budget agreement. Both chambers of Congress are currently under Republican control.

The House-approved bill aims to cut federal spending by at least $1.5 trillion, with a target of $2 trillion. It also seeks to extend the tax cuts enacted by Trump during his first term in 2017. Additionally, the document includes a provision to increase spending on defense and border security by $300 billion. The budget bill further proposes to raise the U.S. debt ceiling by $4 trillion.
