Basra: A consultative workshop was held today in Basra Governorate to discuss ways to integrate climate resilience into the education sector in Iraq. Organized by the “Together for the Protection of Humanity and the Environment” Association, the event took place in the auditorium of the College of Pharmacy at Al-Kunuz University. It saw participation from several governmental and academic bodies, civil society organizations, and various community group representatives. The workshop included presentations by Basra Deputy Governor Hassan Thahir Al-Najjar and the Governor’s Advisor for Education, Hassan Al-Atabi, that addressed the climate challenges impacting the education sector. Discussions also reviewed project activities, target areas and groups, and identified Basra Governorate’s priorities and needs in education, environment, and climate resilience.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Najjar, who heads the Steering Committee for Climate Change and Agriculture, highlighted that Basra Governorate initiated the committee’s formation in early 2026. The committee’s role is to coordinate activities among relevant organizations and departments, geographically distributing climate change and agriculture projects across districts and sub-districts, tailoring them to specific needs.

Al-Najjar noted the potential for integrating coordination efforts between the two committees, as their objectives overlap in addressing climate change effects across sectors such as education and agriculture. He emphasized that unifying efforts and coordinating among the relevant authorities will support programs and projects aimed at enhancing climate resilience and achieving a more effective response to environmental challenges in the governorate.
