Cairo: Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit confirmed today, Sunday, that displacing Palestinians is unacceptable and the solution lies in immediately rebuilding Gaza. The League said in a statement that “Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit received the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and Senior Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in Gaza Sigrid Kaag, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League.”
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Jamal Rushdi, the official Spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that “the meeting focused on discussing the catastrophic situation in the Gaza Strip,” stressing “the importance of consolidating the ceasefire and accelerating relief efforts to confront the unprecedented destruction witnessed by the Strip.”
Rushdi stressed that “the two sides agreed to reject the displacement scenario as a serious threat to stability in the region,” noting that “displacement should not be a condition for reconstruction, but rather that technological capabilities and existing programs allow reconstruction efforts to begin while the residents of Gaza remain on their land.”
For his part, Aboul Gheit stressed that “displacement represents an existential threat to the Palestinian cause,” considering that “the Zionist goal is to make the Strip uninhabitable, paving the way for this internationally rejected scenario.” He stressed that “the rational and humane solution lies in strengthening and accelerating relief efforts, in preparation for launching reconstruction programs urgently.”
