Baghdad: The Federal Supreme Court affirmed that the Parliament’s presidency will continue to manage the work of the Council of Representatives until the new legislative session convenes.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the court responded to a clarification prepared by the Council of Representatives’ presidency, confirming the text of its interpretative decision. This decision states that the term of the Council of Representatives for the fifth electoral session ends after the general election day for the new Council of Representatives. Consequently, its authority to legislate laws, oversee the performance of the executive branch, and other powers stipulated in Article 61 of the Constitution, ceases.

The court further elaborated that regarding the administrative and financial management of the Council of Representatives’ work until the new Council of Representatives convenes, the Council’s presidency, based on the Council’s internal regulations, may manage it in accordance with established procedures and the provisions of the law.
