Erbil: Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met today with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Michael Regas, who is visiting Erbil to attend the opening of the new U.S. Consulate General building. The meeting focused on bilateral relations and a range of issues of mutual interest.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, President Barzani welcomed the U.S. delegation, noting that the visit reflects Washington's commitment to strengthening its long-term strategic relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. He also expressed appreciation for the United States' continued support and assistance across various fields.
The discussions addressed the latest developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, with particular attention to attacks targeting the region's economic infrastructure. Both sides condemned the recent attack on the Khor Mor gas field and emphasized the need to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure that weapons remain under the exclusive control of the state.
The talks also covered U.S. relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the results of Iraq's parliamentary elections, the ongoing threat of ISIS, and broader regional developments.
