Al-Sudani Expresses Gratitude for UN Support in Iraq


Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has expressed his appreciation for the supportive stance of the UN Secretary-General towards Iraq. In a joint press conference with UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres, the Prime Minister highlighted Iraq’s triumph over terrorism, attributing this success to the sacrifices made by its people.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, Prime Minister al-Sudani emphasized that the conclusion of the UNAMI mission does not mark the end of its partnership with Iraq, underlining the ongoing importance of this relationship. He noted that the recent parliamentary elections were the most organized in the country’s history, and expressed hopes for a balanced relationship with the United Nations going forward.



During the conference, Prime Minister al-Sudani stated that in the current critical period affecting both the region and the world, Iraq has adopted a balanced policy. He also expressed his appreciation for the appointment of former President Barham Salih as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. As a gesture of appreciation, he announced the naming of a street in Baghdad as ‘the United Nations’ street.



UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres, speaking alongside the Prime Minister, acknowledged the transformation of Iraq into a nation characterized by security and stability. He praised Iraq’s rich civilization and history and expressed his pleasure at visiting Baghdad. Guterres also congratulated Iraq on the success of its recent parliamentary elections, reinforcing the partnership between the two entities.
