Baghdad: UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres affirmed that Iraq today is a different country, one of security and safety. Speaking at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, he said that Iraq is a land of civilization and history.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Guterres highlighted Iraq’s courage, steadfastness, and determination in overcoming terrorism, foreign interference, and sectarianism. He acknowledged Iraq’s efforts in repatriating its citizens from al-Hol camp, showcasing the country’s commitment to addressing complex humanitarian issues.
Guterres also congratulated Iraq on the successful holding of the recent elections, expressing hope that the Iraqi government will rebuild trust and stability. He explained that the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) aided in reconstruction efforts after decades of conflict, aiming to support Iraq in its journey towards stability.
He noted that with the closure of the mission, essential development and human resources agencies will continue to operate, signaling ongoing international support. He reiterated the commitment to stand with Iraq in building a prosperous and stable nation.
