Iraq Remains Absent from Top 20 Holders of US Treasury Securities for Second Year

Baghdad: For the second consecutive year, Iraq has not been listed among the top 20 countries holding US Treasury securities, as revealed in the US Department of Treasury’s recent announcement. The report highlighted the positions of Japan and the United Kingdom as the largest holders, with notable increases in their investments, while China saw a reduction in its holdings.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Treasury’s 2025 report provided specific figures for these major holders. Japan increased its holdings to $1.2 trillion, and the United Kingdom’s holdings rose to $877 billion as of October. In contrast, China’s holdings decreased from $700 billion to $688 billion. The report also identified Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as the only Arab nations within the top 20 holders, possessing $134 billion and $110 billion in US Treasury securities, respectively.

The report further detailed that the global value of US Treasury bonds held by countries reached $9.242 trillion. Despite Iraq’s absence from the top 20, it maintains approximately $32 billion in US bonds, which are part of its reserve investments.
