Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani affirmed the continuation of the rehabilitation of Baghdad’s old city and its timeless landmarks, and the preservation of its architectural heritage. A statement by the Prime Minister’s Media Office indicated that “Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani inaugurated today, Sunday, the St. Gregory the Impregnable Armenian Orthodox Church in central Baghdad, following its restoration, on the occasion of the approaching Christmas celebrations.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sudani toured the church’s halls and rooms to monitor the comprehensive restoration of this important edifice. In his address, Al-Sudani expressed his appreciation for being present at this religious site and announcing its reopening after the completion of restoration and rehabilitation work. He emphasized that the church building stands as a testament to the innocent victims targeted by terrorism in Tahrir Square, innocent and peaceful Iraqis.

Al-Sudani stated that “the reconstruction of the church reflects the diversity and coexistence in the new Iraq. It is a step towards reviving Baghdad’s splendor and preserving its heritage and cultural, architectural, and civilizational legacy. The reconstruction and rehabilitation of the church is a commitment and a duty towards a noble segment of our people.” He expressed his gratitude and appreciation for all the efforts involved in the rehabilitation process and affirmed the government’s commitment to preserving heritage and showcasing Baghdad’s historical face by reviving its architectural landmarks.

The Prime Minister also noted the “continued work on rehabilitating Baghdad’s old districts and their timeless landmarks, and the ongoing approach of preserving Baghdad’s architectural heritage, which shines with its churches, mosques, and buildings.” He affirmed that thanks to the blood of our martyrs from all segments of our people, we emerged victorious and united from the confrontation with terrorism, and we moved forward towards rebuilding the country and achieving economic, urban, and developmental progress.

The St. Gregory the Impregnable Armenian Orthodox Church underwent a maintenance, restoration, and renovation project, the first and most extensive since its construction in 1957, with the aim of revitalizing this religious and heritage landmark.
