US Takeover of Greenland Could End NATO, Says Danish PM

Denmark: Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen asserted on Monday evening that any US takeover of Greenland would spell the end of NATO. Frederiksen’s remarks came in response to US President Donald Trump’s renewed call for the US to seize control of the strategic, mineral-rich Arctic island, following the military operation in Venezuela over the weekend.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Frederiksen and her Greenlandic counterpart, Jens Frederik Nielsen, condemned the US president’s statements, warning of “catastrophic consequences,” while several European leaders expressed their solidarity. “If the United States chooses to attack another NATO country militarily, then everything will stop, and that includes our alliance, and therefore the security that has been achieved since the end of World War II,” Frederiksen told Danish TV2 on Monday.

The swift operation carried out by US forces in Caracas left the world in shock and heightened the concerns of Denmark and Greenland, a self-governing territory under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark and a member of NATO.
