Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres on Thursday. The meeting took place in Ankara, according to diplomatic sources at the Turkish Foreign Ministry. The Turkish sources did not provide any information about the topics discussed during the meeting.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, on Tuesday, UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson, St©phane Dujarric, announced that Ant³nio Guterres would visit Turkey as part of his annual Ramadan visit to express solidarity with Turkey and its people. Dujarric explained, in remarks at UN headquarters in New York, that Guterres would travel to Ankara this year to express his appreciation for the generosity of the Turkish people in hosting refugees, both during his previous tenure as High Commissioner for Refugees and as Secretary-General of the United Nations.
He noted that Turkey has opened its doors to millions of people forced to flee violence and persecution, and confirmed that Guterres would meet with representatives of civil society organizations working to support refugees within the country. Dujarric added that Turkey hosts approximately 2.5 million refugees and asylum seekers, making it one of the countries hosting the largest refugee populations in the world, including more than 2.3 million Syrian refugees.
During his visit, the Secretary-General is scheduled to hold talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
