Ankara: The Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, Numan Kurtulmus, has declared that Israel’s attacks on Lebanon and Syria constitute a clear breach of international law. This statement was made during a joint press conference with Norway’s parliamentary head, Mesut Karahani, in Ankara.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Kurtulmus emphasized that ceasing Israel’s “aggressive policies” is essential for attaining peace in the Middle East. He highlighted the region’s urgent requirement for calm and stability. Furthermore, Kurtulmus expressed Turkey’s strong support for the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran, which began in Geneva and are set to continue in Doha. He voiced optimism that these talks will produce beneficial outcomes, fostering a peace process acceptable to both parties, given their crucial significance for regional and global security.
Kurtulmus cautioned against efforts by certain nations to disrupt the negotiation process through “provocations,” urging the international community to stay alert to any attempts to derail the talks. He noted Israel’s evident discontent with the US-Iranian negotiations, underscoring the necessity to prevent provocations that could jeopardize the discussions.
Addressing the Palestinian issue, Kurtulmus reiterated Turkey’s stance that the conflict can only be resolved with the formation of an independent and fully sovereign Palestinian state within the 1967 borders. He commended Norway for its support and official recognition of the State of Palestine in 2024. Kurtulmus concluded by affirming that Turkey and Norway share a unified perspective on the Palestinian issue, asserting that a two-state solution is the sole path to achieving peace in the region.
