Baghdad: US President Donald Trump called on Congress to begin work to abolish birthright citizenship following the Supreme Court’s ruling.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, this came hours after the US Supreme Court overturned President Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship. The Supreme Court rejected the restrictions proposed by President Trump, thus invalidating a key pillar of his immigration program.
Trump expressed his views on the social networking site Truth Social, stating, “The Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship, which is bad for our country, but we can easily fix it in Congress with legislation supported by the President.” He believes the court’s deliberations indicated that Congress could abolish birthright citizenship without a constitutional amendment.
Trump further emphasized, “Congress must begin work today to end this costly and unfair birthright for our country. Lawmakers will have my full and unconditional support.”
