Washington: The US Navy announced Sunday that it has suspended the active search for a sailor missing since Wednesday following a helicopter crash in the Arabian Sea.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Navy stated in a Twitter post, "The US Navy has suspended the active search for a sailor from Naval Helicopter Squadron 5 (HSC 5), based on the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), effective 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time on July 5, 2026."
The sailor was reported missing on July 1 after an MH-60S helicopter went down in the Arabian Sea. The search was concluded after an extensive effort by the US Navy and US Air Force in the US Central Command area of responsibility. The sailor's identity will be kept confidential for at least 24 hours until the next of kin have been notified, following Navy protocol.
The search and rescue operation spanned over 102 hours and covered an area exceeding 14,000 square miles. It involved multiple naval and air assets including the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush, the 46th Naval Helicopter Attack Squadron, fixed-wing aircraft, HSC 14 and HSM 71 helicopter squadrons, and several Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers such as USS Ross, USS Donald Cook, USS Higgins, USS Mason, and USS John Finn with HSM 51. Additionally, two squadrons of P-8 Poseidon aircraft and numerous other US Air Force aircraft were part of the mission.
