Humam Hamoudi Calls for Comprehensive Anti-Corruption Vision in Iraq

Baghdad: Humam Hamoudi, the head of the Supreme Islamic Council, emphasized the importance of continuing Iraq's anti-corruption efforts with a comprehensive vision and strategy. He stressed this necessity during his address at the Dialogue Forum, urging for a plan free from political exploitation and one that addresses the root causes of corruption in the country.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Sheikh Hamoudi stated, "We commend the Dawn Campaign against corruption, which was essential for purifying and cleansing the political process in Iraq, despite the pain, hardship, losses, and exceptional measures involved." He underscored the need for an ongoing anti-corruption campaign that is methodical and non-politicized, asking, "What kind of Iraq do we want?" as a starting point for addressing the issue.

Hamoudi questioned the lack of governmental integrity and oversight, particularly in light of the recent revelations concerning the North Oil Company. He remarked on the systemic failure, noting that the parliamentary system, despite its foundations laid by Sayyid al-Sistani and the citizens' sacrifices, would not be easily shaken by merely removing corrupt individuals.

He highlighted the role of the Supreme Religious Authority, which has long advocated for combating corruption, recognizing its destructive impact on the state and society. Hamoudi attributed much of the corruption to the post-2003 occupation, which facilitated the looting of state resources and the rise of influential figures aligned with the occupation.

For a successful battle against corruption, Hamoudi urged for the cultivation of a culture of integrity, inspired by Imam Ali's teachings, to be instilled in educational institutions and government bodies. He called for a collective effort from the people, government, and parliament to uphold this integrity, monitor electoral spending, and prevent the ascent of opportunists.
