Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed optimism about strengthening NATO unity and anticipated a favorable decision on the F-35 fighter jets during his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the NATO summit in Ankara.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Erdogan emphasized the strategic importance of Turkey and the United States as key NATO members, highlighting the potential for a unified stance through the Ankara summit. He expressed confidence in the summit’s success in fostering solidarity between the two nations.
Addressing the ongoing discussions about the F-35 program, Erdogan reiterated that the topic is not new and mentioned previous discussions with the United States. He indicated that a promise had been made to deliver five F-35 aircraft to Turkey, expressing his belief in President Trump’s commitment to fulfill this promise and anticipating a positive outcome at the summit.
Erdogan also addressed Turkey’s indigenous fighter jet project, “Kan,” stating that discussions with President Trump would focus on the engines for the Kaan fighter jet. He expressed hope that Trump would provide promising news on this matter.
On regional matters, Erdogan underscored the significance of the leaders’ summit in promoting regional peace through dialogue and coordination with President Trump. He highlighted Turkey’s efforts to mediate between Iran and the United States, aiming to contribute to global peace initiatives.
Regarding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Erdogan mentioned plans to discuss developments with President Trump, exchange perspectives, and determine subsequent steps.
President Trump arrived in Ankara to attend the NATO summit, marking the second time Turkey has hosted the event, following the Istanbul summit in 2004. The summit is considered crucial due to the current global security challenges and the alliance’s role in addressing them.
