Erdogan and Starmer Forge Military Cooperation Agreement

Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer have signed a significant security and defense partnership document at the 36th NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government in Ankara.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Turkish Presidency’s Directorate of Communications confirmed that the Security and Defense Partnership Agreement between Turkey and the United Kingdom reinforces their mutual commitment to each other’s defense and to NATO. The agreement reflects a shared determination by these prominent NATO allies to strengthen and institutionalize cooperation in response to the evolving Euro-Atlantic security environment.

The statement highlighted that the partnership will allow Turkey and the UK to enhance their collaboration by deepening consultations through new mechanisms. This includes political and military dimensions of security and defense policies, such as deterrence and defense, military cooperation, defense industries and technology, cybersecurity, countering hybrid threats, combating terrorism, enhancing civilian resilience and preparedness, and the space sector.

The Directorate of Communications further noted the unique contributions of Turkey and the UK to the security of Europe and the Euro-Atlantic space. Emphasizing Allied solidarity and shared responsibility, the two nations reaffirm their commitment to building a stronger Europe. Within a robust NATO alliance, they aim to increase defense spending and enhance cooperation to provide necessary capabilities, all while maintaining strong transatlantic ties.
