Basra Human Rights Office Urges Iraqi Delegation to Address Key Issues in Kuwait Talks

Basra: The Human Rights Office in Basra is urging the Iraqi delegation currently visiting Kuwait to prioritize discussions on the pressing issues affecting Iraqi women and fishermen. The delegation, led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and including the Governor of Basra, has been called upon to address these matters with the Kuwaiti counterparts.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Office Director Mahdi al-Tamimi emphasized two primary concerns that need immediate attention. The first issue involves women of Iraqi origin from the Basra Governorate, who face significant humanitarian challenges. Al-Tamimi urged the delegation to work towards an agreement that would facilitate the issuance of official documents for these women, enabling them to access healthcare, unfreeze their assets, and regularize their residency. This is particularly crucial for widows and divorcees who have custody of Kuwaiti children.

Al-Tamimi also highlighted the plight of five Iraqi fishermen from Basra who are currently detained. He called for their immediate release and compensation, noting that they were arrested within Iraqi territorial waters. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, thereby reinforcing good neighborly relations between Iraq and Kuwait.
